Via Rail and Amtrak Trip June 2016 - 16 Photo Galleries Updated to Reagan's Photo Galleries

Peggy's Cove near Halifax, Nova Scotia

Friends, I've been home just over a week and have now optimized and updated all my photos to Reagan's Photo Galleries. There are 16 photo galleries documenting my trip to Toronto, Halifax, Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, Niagara Falls, Albany, NY, Poughkeepsie, NY, Chicago, and New Orleans.  In all I boarded and rode the trains nine times including twice of some of them. The trains were Via Rail Corridor trains, Via Rail THE OCEAN, Amtrak's Maple Leaf, Amtrak Empire trains, Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited, and Amtrak's City of New Orleans. So I think I have got my train riding "bug" satisfied until October 5 when I will ride Amtrak's California Zephyr again. That's my favorite Amtrak train and I will ride it a couple times a year.

You can reach my 16 photo galleries by clicking on the heading above or here:

For those of you who read my travel Update emails on your mobile devices here is and APP you can upload to your mobile device to view these 16 photo galleries. You can also access the Home Page of my photo galleries website from within this APP.  To add this APP to your mobile device you do need to access this link on your mobile device to add the APP.

Reagan's Mobile APP

To add this APP to your mobile device just click on this link above and follow instruction on your mobile device.

Whether on your mobile device or PC/Mac, enjoy the photos.  If viewing on your PC/Mac you might want to save the 16 galleries as a bookmark so you can take your time viewing the photos.

My next travel planned is October 3-12.

I'll fly to Chicago for two nights at the Doubletree Wit Hotel before boarding my favorite Amtrak train the California Zephyr October 5 to Emeryville(San Francisco). I'll stay 3 nights in Emeryville and then catch Amtrak's Coast Starlight to Los Angeles. In Los Angeles I'll take the Fly Away bus from the train station to LAX Airport and two nights in the LAX Hilton. Wednesday April 12 I will fly American Airlines nonstop to Nashville.

Via Rail and Amtrak Trip June 2016 - Nashville bound Friday, June 17

Riverwalk Outlet Connection at New Orleans' Hilton Riverside

My twentieth day away from home and, yes, I'm ready to be home in Nashville/Franklin, TN. Super Shuttle picks me up at 10:10 AM tomorrow Friday morning to take me to my Southwest Airlines 1:10 PM flight home to Nashville. My young friend Henry G. will be picking me up and taking me home in Nashville.

I've stayed indoors most of today since New Orleans is experiencing triple digit heat index. Not good for us older folks. Stay indoors and "hydrate" is the motto. The photo above is of my hotel the Hilton Riverside. Good thing it is connected to the Riverwalk Outlet Mall. That's been the extent of my day's whereabouts. Time to convert to resting mode tonight and after I get home.

I will indeed be home in Nashville for the foreseeable future.

Okay, folks, this is the last update for this trip.  When I have all my photos optimized, organized, and uploaded to my photo galleries, I will do an update to let you know they are ready for your viewing.

Via Rail and Amtrak Trip June 2016 - New Orleans Wednesday, June 15

Me(Reagan) in along side Amtrak's City of New Orleans

Well, after three days and two nights I've completed my last train ride for this trip. Both Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited and City of New Orleans transported me to Chicago for a 9 hour lay over and then on to New Orleans arriving this afternoon around 3 PM. The journey was not without an exciting end though. After all the checked baggage was delivered and picked up, my bag was no where to be found. Kudos to New Orleans Amtrak personnel checking and contacting baggage people in Chicago and Albany. No evidence was found in those two places that my bag was find-able. The New Orleans employees took down all the information and sent me on to my hotel. Since I was wearing long sleeve shirt and not knowing when or if my luggage would show up, I bought a Kenneth Cole short sleeve shirt at the nearby Riverwalk Outlets Mall connected to my hotel.  Happily, Amtrak called me about 8 tonight and told me my bag came in on the Cresent train from New York and they delivered the bag to me at my hotel around 9 PM. All is good. I hope my bag enjoyed traveling on two separate trains from me. I learned a lesson to not check a bag at Albany.

I did get to spend about 9 hours in Chicago yesterday which included a visit to the top of the Willis Tower 103 floors high and a stroll south of Union Station to a place I could watch trains departing south and also find a Panera Bread store where I had a good cup of Chicken Noodle soup and frozen lemonade. In my walk I passed the best flower aroma from the flowers in the photo below.

Flowers in Chicago with most pleasant aroma

I think tomorrow will simply be a spontaneous day in New Orleans with rest and recuperation.  Looking forward to flying home Friday afternoon on Southwest Airlines. Time for a long, long time enjoying life at home. Looking forward to the Tennessee Titans 2016 NFL season and worship at home with my Forest Hills Baptist fellowship.

I've taken over 1,300 photos which I will work on and update my Reagan's Photo Galleries in next few weeks. When ready, I post an update to let you know they are available for your viewing.

Via Rail and Amtrak Trip June 2016 - Sunday in Albany, NY, June 12

Entrance to Albany's Hudson River Walkway

Me, Reagan, along the Hudson River in Albany, NY

My last full day in Albany began as a partly cloudy sunny day but became more of a brisk cloudy bright day with almost full cloud cover and very windy - 15-25 mph. After a late breakfast I walked the very short walk from my hotel to the Albany Hudson River Walk. This is another enjoyable riverside walkway provided by cities along the Hudson River in New York State. In the first photo you can see the city, state, and national flag at the entrance to the walkway with the river just beyond and city of Rensselaer on the other side where the Amtrak station is located. If you look closely, you will see an Amtrak train passing through. Being a government town Albany is very quiet on Sunday so I stopped by a Rite-Aid store and stocked up on ice cream, water, and Coke Zero planning to hang out at the hotel this afternoon and evening.

One of the great things about technology now is the ability to keep up with news, sports, and other things from home. This blog is a gift that technology provided to let me share my travels with you. In recent years, churches have been using technology to even stream their worship services and provide websites full of church information.  I took advantage of the streaming service provided by my former home church First Baptist Nashville this afternoon to worship with them.  I was surprisingly blessed to watch and hear a quartet of men including my closest adopted Bradley family member Russ singing during the worship service.  Here are three photos I captured from my laptop of the worship service.

Friends, how about a two day break in these updates? Tomorrow I board Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited for an overnight trip to Chicago. After a fairly long day between trains in Chicago, I depart Tuesday night on Amtrak's City of New Orleans bound for New Orleans in my home state Louisiana.  I'll do my next update Wednesday night from New Orleans where I will stay two nights at the Hilton Riverside. Friday afternoon June 17, I'll fly home to Nashville. Surprisingly, I have no future travel plans until October so it will be good to become a home body in Tennessee for a while.

Via Rail and Amtrak Trip June 2016 - Poughkeepsie, NY, Saturday, June 11

Me, Reagan, way up high on the longest river crossing pedestrian bridge in the world
\
Poughkeepsie ICE HOUSE where I ate late lunch

Longest pedestrian bridge in world over the Hudson River - Use to be a railroad trestle - Note the American flag at the half way point crossing the river

This is the same flag in the above photo.  I made it to the flag walking on the pedestrian bridge

Information Sign about this being the longest river crossing pedestrian bridge when it opened in 2009

Okay, so today is five photos. It's too hard to tell the story of my day trip to Poughkeepsie, NY, today with just one photo. I really did not know what to expect when I decided to go a little over an hour south of Albany to visit Poughkeepsie. The reason I chose Poughkeepsie was all the mail I received through the years from Reader's Digest postmarked Poughkeepsie. The day started out with threat of scattered thunderstorms some possibly severe. Well it did rain here in Albany around 11 AM but after that the clouds parted and as you can see from the photos, the sun shined brightly on Poughkeepsie. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Poughkeepsie waterfront with nice walking paths and the longest pedestrian bridge crossing a river in the world. An old railroad trestle was converted to the pedestrian bridge in 2009. The Ice House Building photo is the restaurant right on the river where I ate a late lunch of crab cakes and French onion soup.

For my nephew Mark O. in Shreveport, a couple I rode on the elevator to the top to the pedestrian bridge told me they were from Longview, TX. I had to tell them my nephew once was the city engineer for Longview and also show them my Owen Engineering jacket.

Tomorrow being Sunday, I plan to spend the day near the hotel and at some point worship again via the internet with First Baptist Church, Nashville.  I understand my church Forest Hills Baptist is possibly streaming our worship services but, so far, I have been unsuccessful finding it on line since there does not seem to be a clear URL address. May walk later in the day to the Hudson River front near my hotel.

Monday is departure day again - this time on Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited to Chicago and on to New Orleans via Amtrak's City of New Orleans.

Via Rail and Amtrak Trip June 2016 - Albany, NY, Friday, June 10

New York State Capitol Building in Albany, NY

Amtrak Train departing Albany, NY

My first full day back in the USA has been relaxing to an extent. This morning I took a city bus north to Colonie Mall just to check it out and eat a slice of pepperoni pizza for lunch. I looked several times but was not successful in Canada in finding a place for a simple small pizza. Yes, there were pizza restaurants but they piled them high with lots of things I don't particularly like. After lunch I returned to the hotel for a short while and then took the city bus again this time over the Hudson River to Rensselaer, NY, to watch the trains come and go for a while. Now back in the hotel relaxing for the evening.

Tomorrow, I have rail tickets to travel to Pougkeepsie, NY, for a day trip. For now, tomorrow is predicted to be one of the warmest days of my trip but also scattered thunderstorms(some possibly severe) are predicted. Pougkeepsie has several riverside walks, etc., on the banks of the Hudson River.  Here is hoping the rain will not interfere too much.

The two photos above represent my vision of Albany - the State Capitol Building and Amtrak train departing the Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak Station.

Via Rail Canada Trip June 2016 - Back in the USA Thursday, June 9

Last Canadian Flag Just Before Leaving Niagara Falls, Canada

A
Crossing the Niagara River leaving Canada and entering USA

First USA Flag Entering Niagara Falls, NY, USA

Back in the USA - I left Toronto 8:20 AM this morning on Amtrak's Maple Leaf Train operated by Via Rail to the border in Niagara Falls, OT, Canada, and an all new Amtrak crew once we entered Niagara Falls, NY, USA. All passengers and the train equipment were processed by USA Customs immediately after we crossed into the USA.  Process went smoothly but we still had to get off the train for a short while and wait in the Customs offices as K-9 dogs went through the train sniffing for drugs, etc. Train then operated on time all the way here to Albany, NY, arriving here at 6:50 PM.  A short taxi ride and I was in my room at the Hilton Albany.  Took just a short time to walk a block or two around the hotel which is located right at the capitol building visible from my room.

If I can, tomorrow will be a leisurely day checking out the area via the "bus" system. Saturday I will travel Amtrak just over an hour south to Poughkeepsie, NY along the banks of the Hudson River.  Sunday, not sure.  There are three churches immediately adjacent to my hotel although they are Catholic, Episcopal, and one named St. Peter's so no Protestant churches.  I'll check that out tomorrow.

I chose the photos above to represent my officially exiting Canada and returning to my home country USA.  It's good to be home in the USA.

Via Rail Canada Trip June 2016 - Last Full Day In Canada Wednesday, June 8

The Moose is Associated With Canada
While not the national animal(that's the beaver) lots of Canada associates the moose with their country.  The moose in this photo is in the Toronto Convention Center which I saw on the way to the Ripley's Aquarium of Canada. My visit to the aquarium was one of my least favorite things I have done in Canada. The aquarium is very similar to the Ripley's Aquarium in Gatlinburg, TN. The difference today was the overwhelming crush of school children wall to wall in the museum numbering in the 100's if not 1,000's. It was so crowded, the children were sitting in groups with their leaders in the exhibit area on the floor eating their lunch.  I must say they were mostly well behaved. The problem was the overwhelming number and crush of the school children.

After leaving the aquarium I "hopped" on the hop on hop off bus for an almost two hour tour of the city. When the bus stopped very near my hotel, I decided it was a good time(after 2 PM) to "hop off" and head to my room for a quiet afternoon in the room. About 5 PM I made my last visit to Eaton Centre for my evening meal in the huge food court occupying the full bottom floor of the mall. Now I am back in my room and it "packing" time again.

Another early morning tomorrow(Thursday) to get to Union Station and board Amtrak's Maple Leaf for a 8:20 AM departure.  We will cross the border into the USA at Niagara Falls where we go through customs before continuing on to Albany, NY.  Scheduled arrival time is 6:55 PM meaning another long day on the train in coach seats.

So, this is my last update from Canada. Tomorrow's update will come from the USA. I'm ready to be back in the USA.

Via Rail Canada Trip June 2016 - Toronto Surprise Tuesday, June 7

Flower Bloom at Allen Conservatory in Toronto

Bet you did not expect a flower photo today. I did not. This morning I set out walking on Queen Street from my hotel to Younge Street where Eaton Centre is located. Once I got to Younge I decided to walk up this "main" street of Toronto and eventually I decided to ride a streetcar and a friendly lady told me as we passed a large park that there was a very nice conservatory in the park so I decided to check it out. Should have had my friend Charlie from Costa Rica with me so he could identify and appreciate all the gorgeous plants and flowers. Yes, I took many photos. I did drop by Eaton Centre for a quick lunch. Later I continued opposite direction from my hotel to visit the CN Tower including eating in the less expensive casual restaurant on the observation floor level.

Tomorrow's forecast is for very windy and temperature only in the 50's very similar to last week when I visited Peggy Cove and coastal area south of Halifax. Also, tomorrow will be my last full day in Canada as I will depart 8:20 AM Thursday on Amtrak's Maple Leaf train back into the USA and on to Albany, NY. Not sure what I will be doing tomorrow.  Possibly will return to Eaton Centre and visit the Ripley's Aquarium near the CN Tower.

Via Rail Canada Trip June 2016 - Niagara Falls Monday, June 6

Reagan at Niagara Falls in Canada

Niagara Falls

So many views and photographs today, I had to choose two. Today was a beautiful perfect weather day to be at Niagara Falls. My motor coach tour to Niagara Falls began at 9 AM this morning and including 3 hours at the Falls to do the Falls on my own. Some did the Hornblower boats that go up to and almost under the Falls but having done the similar Lady of the Mist boat ride with friends Kerry and Laura B. many years ago, I opted to stay on dry land. I enjoyed walking along the Falls promenade and taking many photos I'll share with you in my photo galleries after I return home June 17.

After our visit to Niagara Falls we traveled to Niagara on the Lake village.  The village was filled with beautiful flower gardens and buildings. On the recommendation of our guide, I had a maple walnut ice cream cone. Canadians are proud of their production of "maple".

Weather wise it was a beautifully warm sunny day that ended as we were driving back to Toronto with a heavy hard rain. So glad I was not driving.

Tuesday will be a "whatever" day meaning I don't really have a plan for the day. I do expect I will return to Eaton Centre plus get out and walk to discover the area around my hotel.  Still have not been up to the CN Tower so will probably do that Tuesday or Wednesday.

Via Rail Canada Trip June 2016 - Toronto Sunday, June 5

Flock of Canadian Geese Landing at Eaton Centre

The above photo is actually art work of life size geese from metal and photographs which were installed for the opening of Eaton Centre in 1979. Today has been a day of "taking it easy". It did include a walk to Union Station to pick up my Amtrak tickets for my train from Toronto to Albany, NY. I had to pick up the tickets since it is a international trip during which I will pass through US Customs in Niagara Falls, NY. After picking up my tickets I took the subway to Eaton Centre for about an hour. That's when I took this photo of a landing flock of Canadian Geese. Very impressive in person.

I returned to the hotel and connected my laptop to the internet and joined my long time home church, First Baptist Nashville, for today's worship service. The service was very moving and the sermon for "refugee" Sunday was excellent. While I am very happy at Forest Hills Baptist(just 3 miles from home) I do miss my former church family and great worship services.

I visited the Starbucks in my hotel twice today. First visit was for breakfast and tonight I ate a light snack supper after visiting my hotel lounge for appetizers.

Niagara Falls is the destination for tomorrow. I will take my only all day motor coach tour for this trip.  I'll be touring 9 am to 7 pm.  Niagara Falls is about 90 minutes from Toronto.  Check my update tomorrow for a report on my trip.  I'm thinking the feature photo with be of the Falls.

Via Rail Canada Trip June 2016 - Back in Toronto, Saturday, June 4

Meet Joanne, My Sleeper Attendant on Via Rail

Yea, after about 28 hours on Via Rail's Ocean and Train 65, I arrived back in Toronto about 4:30 PM this afternoon.  I really enjoyed the Ocean trip but must confess the almost 6 hours ride from Montreal to Toronto did me in.  So much so, that I have cancelled the return trip to Montreal next Tuesday. Instead I will stay five nights here at the Toronto Hilton and take Amtrak's Maple Leaf on Thursday to Albany, NY. Sunday is forecast to be rainy in Toronto clearing up Monday through Wednesday.  So tomorrow is a day of rest. Planning to join First Baptist Church, Nashville's worship service tomorrow morning via UStream and the Internet. FBC was my home church 1966 to 2003.  I have already booked an all day trip to Niagara Falls for Monday.  Sometime in these next days, I'll visit Eaton(Shopping) Centre. So keep watching for these updates.

Today's featured photo is of my sleeping car attendant Joann. She was my attendant on both Ocean trips going to and coming back from Halifax. I enjoyed talking with her and she seemed genuinely interested in hearing about my travels, family, and life. She was a great listener and even shared some things about her life. She will be disappointed that I am not returning to Montreal.

Have a great worship day Sunday, everyone!

Via Rail Canada Trip June 2016 - Via Rail's Ocean and Train 63 Friday-Saturday June 3-4

Reagan on Atlantic Coast beach south of Halifax, NS

So long, Halifax and Nova Scotia! One last look at a photo from the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia. Boarding Via Rail's Ocean train departing Halifax today Friday at 1 PM.  Arriving 10 AM Saturday in Montreal and connecting to Via Rail Train 65 continuing on to Toronto for late afternoon arrival.  Will be staying three nights at the Toronto Hilton.

I really enjoyed my stay in Halifax.  With a little more time, I would have explored The Citadel fortress although I did ride up to the entrance in time to see and hear the canon shot which happens every day at noon.  Halifax is a place I would return to more in mid summer when it was a little warmer than my experience.  It's a great city to be outdoors.

Thanks for reading my blog.  I be updating from Toronto tomorrow night.

Via Rail Canada Trip June 2016 - Halifax South Shore Tour Thursday June 2

Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia, Canada

A great day touring the South Shore south of Halifax today. Visited three small villages and followed the Atlantic Ocean shoreline a couple hours south of Halifax. Enjoyed the day touring with two young German girls and our guide. The photo from Peggy's Cove above is typical of the scenes along the South Shore I experienced today.  Actual population of Peggy's Cove is 35 so the villages along the coast are small indeed. Those who work in the tourist shops commute from out of town. Took lots of photos since we visited so many photographic harbors.  As usual, finding one photo to represent the full day is impossible.

It's was a windy blustery mid 50's day with lots of sunshine. Special thanks to my nephew Mark giving me the warm "Owen Engineering" wind breaker jacket with a hood. That jacket along with thermal undershirt and warm clothes has been a life saver today. Temperatures this week in Halifax have been 70 Monday and Tuesday, mid 60's Wednesday, and mid 50's today.

I pack tonight getting ready for my return trip to Montreal and Toronto on Via Rail's Ocean and Train 63.  Train leaves tomorrow at 1 PM and arrives in Toronto late Saturday afternoon.  I'll look forward to warmer weather.

Via Rail Canada Trip June 2016 - Museums of Halifax, NS, Wednesday June 1

Lighthouse on island viewable from Halifax Waterfront and my room

As the update title states, I set aside today to visit two museums in Halifax. Right behind my hotel on the waterfront is the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Needing the sleep and rest, I slept in until 9 AM Atlantic Time(7 AM Nashville time).  I then headed off to the nearby Tim Horton's for maple doughnuts and coffee. From Tim Horton's I walked south on the Harbor Walk to the Maritime Museum and enjoyed checking out the exhibits especially those of the Titanic. Halifax is the nearest port to where the Titanic sank so many of the bodies that died in the sinking of the Titanic were brought here. Some were identified and claimed by families who made the trip to Halifax but most of the victims are buried in cemeteries in Halifax including one unidentified two year old.  About five years after the Titanic there was another ship explosion in the Halifax harbor which did much damage to Halifax.  There is a room of exhibits in the museum which feature it.  After leaving the Maritime Museum I walked along the Harbor boardwalk about 30 minutes to Pier 21 where cruise ships call in Halifax and where also the Halifax Emigration Museum is located in the actual same buildings where immigrants arriving by ship were processed.  This was very interesting.  I was with a small group who got a thirty minutes guided tour and then saw a very good 20 minutes movie featuring the actual immigration testimony of several actual immigrants.  Today, almost all immigrants to Canada now arrive by air so the Halifax immigration station at the dock is no longer used.

So, why is the lighthouse photo featured.  That lighthouse in located on a small island in the Halifax Harbor which is visible from my room and the Halifax Harbor Walk.  Selecting only one photo from the many I take each day is very difficult so I featured this photo I took as I walked from the Maritime Museum to the Immigration Museum.

Tomorrow, I spend a full day touring south of Halifax along the South Shore visiting Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, and Mahone Bay. According to the brochure I will see many ocean vistas, lighthouses, historic towns and villages, museums and galleries, and sandy beaches.

Of course, Friday I returned to Via Rail and ride the overnight Ocean train and connecting train returning to Toronto arriving late Saturday afternoon.
