Countdown to Hawaii -- Two Weeks Until Departure Date March 11, 2015

Paradise Cove Luau with the Hashas

Paradise Cove Luau - 2012  - Only two weeks until I am Hawaii bound on American Airlines Wednesday, March 11.  I think everyone in my part of this country would love to leave behind this snow, sleet, and ice of February 2015 so I'm sharing one of my memories of Hawaii 2012.  My favorite Luau on the island of Oahu is the Paradise Cove Luau.  I've been at least three times over the years; however, April 2012 was a very special time as I got to share the Luau with part of my adopted Tennessee Bradley family -- Eric and Cristy Hasha and Princess Abi.  Here are a few photos from the photo gallery.

After the Winter Rail Trip - A Winter Ice Storm and Snow at Home in Nashville/Franklin TN

In front of my condo in Grassland community of Franklin, TN

A Winter Ice Storm and Snow at Home in Nashville/Franklin, TN -- Yes, I have been iced and snowed in since Saturday night at home.  Today is Wednesday and looks like I will be home bound until Saturday - a full week at home.  This adventure began with forecasts of 2-4 inches of snow due overnight Sunday into Monday morning.  Instead sleet and ice mixed with a little snow fell and covered everything with a sheet of ice.  By Tuesday morning the pretty snow scenes were ice skating rinks.

That is solid ice on Tuesday morning

Wednesday Morning Snow - Today, Wednesday morning, measurable snow fell on top of the ice.  While the snow was brief, it was heavy and winds high so it almost looked like white out conditions briefly.

Wednesday morning snow falling

Finally, the snow has stopped leaving a genuine Winter wonderland.  I did take a few photos and posted them in this photo gallery January 15, 2015 Nashville Ice Storm.

Amtrak's California Zephyr January 2015 - Iowa, Illinois, and on to New Orleans on Amtrak's City of New Orleans

Station Stop Burlington, Iowa, before crossing Mississippi River

and

Introducing the last two photo galleries of my January 2015 Amtrak Winter Trip.  After departing Denver I slept as the Zephyr passed through Nebraska and Western Iowa.  Saturday(Jan 24) the Zephyr stopped in Ottumwa and Burlington in Iowa for fresh air breaks as we arrived ahead of schedule in every station and could not leave until the scheduled departure time.  Burlington was our last fresh air break of the journey.  After crossing the Mississippi River departing Burlington, we entered Illinois and all the station stops in Illinois were for unloading passengers only.  So the Zephyr can depart ahead of schedule all the way into Chicago's Union Station were we arrived 45 minutes early.

Click HERE to see a video of my actual train passing through Agency, Iowa.

Amtrak's California Zephyr Engine 202 parked in Chicago's Union Station

On arrival I checked into the Metropolitan Lounge in Chicago's Union Station to wait until boarding Amtrak's City of New Orleans which departed Saturday(Jan 24) night at 8 PM.  The Metropolitan Lounge is a lounge for sleeping car passengers.  The lounge holds your luggage and provide snacks and beverages and clean rest rooms.  All sleeping car passengers board the departing trains from this lounge direct to the waiting trains before coach passengers are boarded from the regular station waiting areas.

Chicago Union Station's Metropolitan Lounge for Sleeping Car Passengers
After checking into the Metropolitan Lounge I did take a short walk in "cold" and "windy" Chicago to the nearby CVS pharmacy to pick up a few items.  Not really enjoying the outdoors in Chicago, I returned to the Lounge and read on my Nook Samsung E-reader, checked my email, and text-ed my sister Pat in Louisiana.  I also added a new blog post dated January 24.  We boarded Amtrak's City of New Orleans and departed on time.  After eating dinner in the dining car, I retired to my bedroom and slept through the night.  The City was stopped in Memphis, TN, when I awoke.  I took a couple photos of the sunrise from my room, got dressed and headed to the dining car for breakfast.

Sunrise in Memphis, TN
Even riding the train, Sunday(Jan 25) was a lazy day with two fresh air breaks in Greenwood, MS, and Jackson, MS, plus following some very slow(20 mph) Canadian National freight trains.  Yes, Canadian National now owns the former Illinois Central rail track the City of New Orleans travels on.  While stopped in Greenwood, MS, I text-ed my great niece Kellie "hi" since we were near Mississippi State University where she is a student.

Slowly but surely the City made it to my home State of Louisiana passing by the western shores of Lake Pontchartrain arriving in New Orleans only 30 minutes late.

If you look close you'll see the New Orleans skyline

Sharing a ride to the hotel in a cab with a couple from Great Britain, I quickly checked in and was rewarded with a view from my hotel room of this cruise ship departing.

View from My Hilton Riverside Hotel Room

My stay in New Orleans was short and knowing that I will return for a week later in May, I stayed mostly in my room and the River Walk shopping mall and food court attached to the Hilton Riverside Hotel.  The only photos I took were views from my room overlooking the Mississippi River.  In additon to this photo gallery New Orleans, you may like to see the photos from my trip to New Orleans in August 2014 in these two galleries - New Orleans: Five Days in Big Easy and National World War II Museum in New Orleans.

Friends, I hope you enjoyed these blog posts covering my January 2015 Winter Rail Trip.  This post completes the coverage of all my photo galleries from this trip.  My next travel is March 11-26 when I return to my favorite travel destination HAWAII.  So if you have not signed up for blog posts to your email, I hope you will.

Amtrak's California Zephyr January 2015 - Glenwood Springs, CO, through Fraser, Winter Park, Moffatt Tunnel to Denver, CO

Snowy Rocky Mountains January 2015

Dashing Through The Snow - Finally, Friday(Jan 23) the California Zephyr traveled through Snow.  Leaving Glenwood Springs, CO, we traveled through Glenwood Canyon.  Across the Colorado River we followed Interstate Highway I-70 for many miles.  I-70 through Glenwood Canyon was one of the last stretches of the original Eisenhower Interstate Highway system completed in 1992 and also one of the most expensive.  My personal interest in the beauty of this highway and how it blends in environmentally stems from my early career 1965 to 1980 working as an auditor for the Federal Highway Administration during the building of the Interstate Highway System.  Here are some of the several photos of this engineering marvel in the beginning of this gallery.

As the Zephyr was leaving the Glenwood Canyon area, we had the perfect opportunity to capture photos of the westward bound Zephyr as we pulled off into a side tract and waited for the west bound Zephyr to pass.

Meeting The West Bound Zephyr

After the west bound Zephyr passed us by, our east bound Zephyr backed back on to the mainline track and continued our journey into the Winter Wonderland of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.  I finally got to see the abundant snow cover for which I planned this Winter ride.  The Zephyr's journey through Granby, Fraser and Winter Park to the Moffatt Tunnel was this photographers dream come true.  There are many many photos of this snow covered wonderland in this photo gallery.  Enjoy taking your time to view them.

The Zephyr cruised into Denver's new Union Station a little before 6 PM to provide over an hour to get outside, walk, and check out the new terminal.  Not long after departing Denver, I had my sleeping car attendant Tony set my roomette for sleeping and was fast asleep as we passed through Nebraska and Western Iowa.  I awoke Saturday(Jan 24) morning in Creston, Iowa.  My next blog post and photo gallery will cover the Zephyr's travel through Iowa and Illinois and our arrival in Chicago.  For now enjoy the 250+ photos in today's gallery.

Amtrak's California Zephyr January 2015 - Green River, UT, through Grand Junction, CO, to Glenwood Springs, CO

California Zephyr Passing Through Rugged Utah Desert

California Zephyr Journey Continues - I awoke Friday(Jan 23) in dry desert land in Green River, Utah.  No snow for several hundred miles until the train was well into Colorado.  The picture above is representative to the landscape I viewed until we were approaching Grand Junction, CO.  Our first fresh air break was Grand Junction, CO, mid morning.  Since we arrived early ahead of schedule we had 30+ minutes break.  This was also a crew(engineer and conductors) change stop.  The new crew took us all the way to Denver.

Departing Grand Junction, we eventually passed through Rifle, CO.  I always look out for this town since I stayed a few days here while on my 2012 August Colorado Road Trip.  I discovered and visited Rifle Falls State Park during my 2012 stay here.  It was just passed Rifle, CO, that I saw the first snow of the day as we began our long journey along the Colorado River.

The Zephyr arrived Glenwood Springs, CO, around Noon and departed on time at 12:10 PM.  My next blog post will share the very snowy photos of the afternoon journey into Denver. Meanwhile, be sure to check out all the photos from today's featured photo gallery.

Amtrak's California Zephyr January 2015 - Emeryville, CA, through Sierra Nevada's to Reno, NV

Reagan in Roomette 003 Car 631 on California Zephyr

California Zephyr Journey Begins - Early morning Thursday, January 22, I "literally" crossed over the tracks from the Hyall House Hotel to greet the arrival of the California Zephyr into the Emeryville Station and then board my Sleeper Car 631 to settle into my Roomette 003, my home for the next three days.

My Train California Zephyr Entering the Emeryville Station

My purpose for traveling on the California Zephyr in January was to see snow in Sierra Nevada's and Rocky Mountains and hopefully much of the journey through Nevada, Utah, and Colorado.  Well, the weather forecast all across the country was for bright sunny mild days and that is indeed what I got.  So when I got to get off and stretch my legs at the various station stops along the way, it was pleasant and mild.  Knowing this weather fact as I departed, I was a little concerned that there would be no or not much snow to travel through.

Thursday's journey took me from the foggy Bay area inland to Sacramento for our first fresh air station stop.  As we began our ascent into the Sierra Nevada's there was some snow cover remaining from earlier snowfalls especially as we approached Truckee, CA.  After Truckee and into the lower elevations the snow disappeared.  Our last fresh air station stop Thursday was Reno, NV, about 4 PM.  The California Zephyr was on time or actually ahead of time arriving at all stations.  This "ahead of schedule" arrival continued all the way to Chicago.  After departing Reno we headed into nighttime through Nevada and Utah passing through Salt Lake City about 2 AM.  I was comfortably sound asleep as we traveled through the night.

Here are a couple photos.  One of snow and another of sunset in Nevada.  You can see these and all the photos in this photo gallery.  Just click this link.
