Amtrak's Cardinal and Michigan Trip - East Lansing, MI, and THE HENRY FORD June 21

THE HENRY FORD Detroit, Michigan

East Lansing, MI, and THE HENRY FORD

I arrived safely in East Lansing, MI, Thursday evening to visit with my nephew Charles and his wife Mary for four nights. They are very good and gracious hosts. Charles will not let me pay for any thing. His comment every time I suggest me paying he says "Don't worry about it."

Friday, we drove to Detroit, MI, to visit THE HENRY FORD. That is the complete name on all the signs but it consists of three attractions - the Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, and the factory tour of the Rouge Factory where Henry Ford built the first automobile assembly line and produced the Model A Ford in early 1900's.

We took the Rouge Factory Tour first where we saw the assembly line for the Ford F-150 Truck. No photography of any kind was allowed in the actual factory building. Photography was allowed only in the visitor welcoming area including a display of Fords from the Model A to the F-150 Truck. In the assembly factory we saw from an elevated platform that completely circled the factory floor the complete assembly of the F-150 from assembly of the parts to the assembled truck being driven off the assembly line. It was really very interesting. My nephew Charles owns a F-150 so he really enjoyed seeing the assembly of these trucks. My niece Sandra from Louisiana and her husband Wayne also own a F-150 and I know they would love to have toured this factory also.

We visited Greenfield Village next and ate lunch there and did a short tour of the village so that we could get to the Henry Ford Museum where we completed the day and left just before closing at 5 PM.  This is a very interesting museum and we could have stayed much longer.

Here are selected photos from all three attractions at THE HENRY FORD.

On the way home to East Lansing we stopped and ate dinner at a good local Mexican Restaurant. We got home my great niece Noel came by and we had a great visit. It was my first time to see her since she was about 10 years old and now she is a graduate of Michigan State University where her dad Charles has been on the faculty for 21 years.

Saturday Morning at home with Charles and Mary

This morning I am hanging out with Charles and Mary at home. This afternoon we are heading over to the MSU campus for a visit and we also get to visit Dr. Charles Owen's office. Later Charles is grilling Chicken and Mary is fixing all the vegetables and salads for a nice home cooked meal.  Tomorrow we are off to do more sightseeing at a German village before I have to pack up and get ready to leave early Monday morning via Amtrak's Blue Water train and Southwest Airlines returning home in Nashville/Franklin by Monday evening. I will post photos from my campus visit and the visit to the German village possibly tomorrow night or after I return home to Nashville early next week.

Here are a few photos I took around Charles and Mary's home this morning. I hope they will forgive me for these impromptu photos.
